"Is she her
mother's keeper?
In "Candy Apples," Rhode Island
playwright Andy Accioli lays a guilt trip on
anyone who's ever had a mother. Apple is the
surname of the family whose matriarch, Lucy,
remembers only her long-dead husband's name. John
is forever expected to show up to take her
shopping. While waiting, Lucy, played with
convincing disorder by Lynn Foster, sings "Take
Me Out to the Ball Game." Her caregiver
daughter, Brenda ( Virginia Cadell Green), won't
let her sisters - Gail Merzer Behrens as the
defensive one and Jacqueline Muro as the brazen
one - forget the sacrifices she's made for Mom.
Brenda gets sympathy from a cop (John Leone),
whose own mother is similarly afflicted. To avoid
spoilers, I'll tell you no more - except to say
it's not a comedy."
